Europe food watchdog says some laxatives ‘may cause cancer’Posted By: News Deskon: January 24, 2018In: Food, Health, Industries, IngredientsPrintEmailThe European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has warned that some substances belonging to a group of plant ingredients called hydroxyanthracene “can damage DNA and may cause cancer”.This group of substances naturally occur in plants such as aloe or senna species. Extracts containing them are used in food supplements for their laxative effect. In 2013, the EFSA found that hydroxyanthracene derivatives in food can improve bowel function, but advised against long-term use and consumption at high doses due to potential safety concerns. The European Commission subsequently asked the EFSA to assess the safety of these plant ingredients when used in foods, and provide advice on a daily intake not associated with adverse health effects.Based on the available data, the EFSA concluded that certain hydroxyanthracene derivatives are genotoxic (they can damage DNA). Therefore it was not possible to set a safe daily intake. It said that when tested in animal studies, some of these substances have been shown to cause cancer in the intestine. The EFSA said that these conclusions are in line with previous assessments on the botanical sources of these substances by other European and international bodies, including the World Health Organization, the European Medicines Agency and, most recently, Germany’s Federal Institute for Risk Assessment.Share with your network: Tags: European Union

UK could follow Scottish lead on minimum unit pricing for alcoholPosted By: News Deskon: May 09, 2018In: Alcohol, Beverage, Business, Health, Industries, LegislationPrintEmailThe UK government could introduce minimum unit pricing for alcohol throughout England, following the lead set last week by Scotland. The Scottish government became the first in the world when it began forcing retailers to charge a minimum £0.50 per unit of alcohol – a policy aimed at reducing the availability of cheap, high-strength and alcohol and easing the burden on public health services.Scottish health secretary Shona Robison claimed that alcohol misuse cost Scotland £3.6 billion each year.Yesterday Steve Brine, a junior health minister, told colleagues in Westminster: “We are developing a new alcohol strategy and as part of this I’m commissioning Public Health England to undertake a review of the evidence for minimum unit price in England.”His comments mark the potential resurrection of a policy first mooted in 2012, but later scrapped amid pressure from the drinks industry.Miles Beale, chief executive of the Wine & Spirits Trade Association (WSTA), said it would be “vital” to look at the evidence from Scotland’s minimum unit pricing policy before making a decision whether to replicate it in England.“At the WSTA we will also be looking closely at the impact of the policy,” Beale said. “The vast majority of people in the UK enjoy a drink responsibly and long term trends show consumption is falling. Minimum unit pricing has never been tried anywhere in the world, is untargeted and has already proved complex and costly to introduce. The Scottish government’s policy will increase the price of around half of the alcohol on supermarket shelves and will impact most drinkers, particularly those on lowest incomes. “The WSTA’s long held view is that minimum unit pricing is likely to be ineffective in changing the behaviour of problem drinkers. There are also questions about the potential impact on cross border trade and illicit alcohol. “It will be vital that the UK government assesses the impact on businesses and on consumers of the minimum unit pricing experiment in Scotland. It will need to be rigorously and objectively monitored and evaluated over time. “I am looking forward to my first meeting with the new Home Office minister in charge of the government’s alcohol policy, Victoria Atkins MP, who took up her post in November. I expect then to discuss the government’s approach to alcohol and how we, the industry, can continue to work in partnership with ministers and officials.”Share with your network: Tags: AlcoholScotlandUK
Four of the US’ largest food companies have joined forces to form a new organisation, which will aim to shape public policy regarding what consumers eat and how it affects their health, their communities and the planet. The Sustainable Food Policy Alliance consists of Danone North America, Mars Incorporated, Nestlé USA, and Unilever United States.Between them, the four founding members have already taken significant independent steps to address consumer concern around nutrition, sustainability and responsible advertising. Together, they will join forces to advocate for public policy in five priority areas. They include improving the quality and accessibility of information available to consumers about the food they purchase; supporting science-based approaches to the environment, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture and climate change; and developing policies that help consumers make better-informed food choices. As part of their alliance, the four companies will also focus on food safety and people: they have agreed to work together to ensure the quality and safety of food products and of the global supply chain; and advance policies that promote a strong, diverse and healthy workplace as well as a strong supply chain, including in rural communities.Five priority areasThe four companies to sign up to the alliance from its outset will focus on five key points:Consumer transparencyEnvironmentFood SafetyNutritionPeople and communities In a joint statement, the CEOs of Danone North America and Nestlé USA, as well as the presidents of Mars Wrigley Confectionery and Unilever United States, said: “The Sustainable Food Policy Alliance was founded on the principle that food companies can and should be doing more to lead and drive positive policy action for the people who buy and enjoy the foods and beverages we make, the people who supply them, and the planet on which we all rely.“As an alliance, we commit first and foremost to leading by example. Each member company has independently proven a willingness to advocate for the long-term interests of the people who farm and supply our raw materials, and people who make and consume our products.“We are committed to a collaborative approach and to listen and learn about issues affecting all parts of our food system from the field to the store shelf and beyond. We understand that we don’t have all the answers and will rely on the best available evidence-based science to inform our positions. We will be transparent about how we reach our decisions and what we hope to achieve.“With so many pressing food policy opportunities on the horizon, now is the time to help steer America’s food policy and our food system on a better path for long-term success.”Share with your network: Tags: DanoneFoodMarsNestlésustainabilityUnileverUS Four major US food companies join forces to steer public policyPosted By: Alex Clereon: July 12, 2018In: Beverage, Business, Dairy, Environment, Food, Industries, People, Social Responsibility, Social responsibilityPrintEmailThe four companies involved are some of the US’ biggest and best-known food manufacturers.
Interview: Rexnord presents its new manufacturing solutionsPosted By: Alex Clereon: November 26, 2018In: Alcohol, Beverage, Industries, Innovation, Interviews, Manufacturing, Technology, VideosPrintEmail At BrauBeviale 2018, Alex Clere spoke with Ivan Soltero, global strategic marketing director for Rexnord, about new manufacturing solutions coming to the fore from the company.Solutions include the Rexnord Magnetflex Curve System, designed to keep bottles of varying materials in place on the production line. Soltero explained, “Our engineers assign magnets which go at the top and bottom of the [conveyor] chain. We all know that whenever we try to move glass containers, cans, and PET bottles, sometimes its difficult to keep them in place. Magnetflex acknowledges that problem and provides a solution for it.”As output demands from processing facilities increase, wear and tear can occur on manufacturers’ machinery. In the past, this has been difficult to fix and replace, but Rexnord contests that its Magnetflex Curve System can be a direct solution for this, as Soltero went on to detail.“It’s always a challenge to keep bottles in place, especially at fast speeds. And with either steel chains, or plastic chains with steel pins, the wear and tear is difficult to control.“The solution that we have created […] reduces wear and tear by holding the chain in place, meaning that any wear and tear is created by the bottles on top.” Share with your network: Tags: BrauBeviale 2018Rexnord Solutions have also been provided for dynamic options for Rexnord’s customers.Soltero detailed how ART Dynamic Chain can add a dynamic edge to manufacturing: “Activator Roller Technology, otherwise known as ART Dynamic Chain, can create multiple behaviours within one single conveyor. So what this means is you can create zero backlight pressure, acceleration, deceleration, rotation clockwise and counter-clockwise, so it really becomes a dynamic smart chain.”Rexnord has also recognised how PET is evolving within the packaging industry. Soltero explained how Dry PT can smooth out the processing stages in manufacturing PET.“Dry PT was created for PET bottles that require fast speed processing. This solution eliminates the need for lubrication, which sometimes can be hard for cleaning sticky situations. The colour itself helps people at the plants to identify when the line is dirty.”Presented and edited by: Alex Clere

Last fall, Domenech was promoted and now serves as a Senate-confirmed assistant secretary in the interior department. “The purpose of ethics rules is to give the public comfort that officials are being impartial in applying the law and martialing out agency decisions,” said Austin Evers, a former state department official and the executive director of the non-partisan ethics watchdog American Oversight. “Having these sorts of meetings with former employers undermines public trust in government.” See more Pacific Standard reporting on US public lands:Inside the fight over pipelines in Louisiana’s Atchafalaya BasinAt the Department of the Interior, industry lobbyists and revolving-door operatives shape sage grouse policyBacked by industry cash, the House committee on natural resources hands the public lands to oil and gas interests‘The ocean is boiling’: the complete oral history of the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill This article is more than 1 year old Share via Email Trump administration A review of records by the Guardian reveals Douglas Domenech held meetings with Texas Public Policy Foundation, which was involved in suing the department Jimmy Tobias Shares287287 Share on Facebook As the crisis escalates… This article is more than 1 year old The Trump White House has also required political appointees to sign an ethics pledge that forbids them from participating during their first two years in office in “any particular matter involving specific parties that is directly and substantially related to” a former employer or former clients. “After you start as an interior department political appointee you can’t be sitting down with former colleagues,” said Joel Clement, who became a whistleblower after being pushed out of his interior department post last year by the new administration. “Interior department employees go through training every single year to make sure they understand these rules inside and out.”An interior department spokeswoman, Heather Swift, said the meetings were “primarily social in nature” – though Domenech’s work calendar shows that his meetings with the Texas foundation concerned specific policy matters. She added that Domenech had reported these meetings to “career ethics officials, and the department is addressing the matter internally”.The US Environmental Protection Agency has labored in recent months under a cloud of suspicion, including allegations of unnecessary spending on first-class plane tickets on the part of its head, Scott Pruitt. The interior secretary, Ryan Zinke, meanwhile, has faced scrutiny over activities including his use of an oil executive’s private plane. And the department’s second in command, David Bernhardt, has prompted concern over meetings with lobbyists for a casino company that is represented by his former law firm. Supported by US domestic policy As allegations of ethics violations mount at the US Environmental Protection Agency, new evidence is raising ethics concerns about key Trump-administration appointees at the interior department.Records reviewed by the Guardian and Pacific Standard show that a high-level interior official, Douglas Domenech, held meetings with a previous employer, the Koch-linked Texas Public Policy Foundation, while it was involved in legal action against the department. Under the ethics rules of the interior department, a powerful agency that manages hundreds of millions of acres of federal land, employees are usually required to recuse themselves from working on specific matters that involve recent employers and that could create the appearance of a conflict of interest. The foundation has been involved since at least 2015 in a lawsuit against the interior department to get the arachnid removed from the endangered species list, arguing that the government’s regulation of the species is unconstitutional. Domenech’s schedule also shows him meeting with the foundation to discuss the “Red River case”, a long-running property dispute between private landowners and the government near the Texas-Oklahoma border. Since 2015, the foundation has been involved in litigation against a division of the interior department concerning the dispute. As someone who’s managed to churn out a near ceaseless array of children with a variety of women, though, Trump has probably never experienced this sensation. If only Eraserhead had featured a scene where Henry Spencer looks at his frail, deformed, agonised snake-baby hybrid and openly wondered whether or not he could date it, the whole thing would be much more relatable for him. ‘This one is going to freak him out’: what Trump would make of David Lynch’s films David Lynch By now, everyone knows about Lynch’s – admittedly slightly decontextualised – claim that Trump might “go down as one of the greatest presidents in history”, along with Trump’s “there goes his career” rejoinder. However, Trump needs high-profile supporters wherever he can get them, and if he really wants to win Lynch over, he’s going to have to become more familiar with the director’s oeuvre. Here’s where he should start. The Elephant Man (1980)Almost uniquely for Lynch, The Elephant Man is a narratively direct story that doesn’t hide behind abstract imagery, so Trump should be able to digest it with relative ease. Better yet, it’s about a man who’s shunned by the public at large; a man regularly brutalised by a society determined to caricature him as a monster. Heck, if the lead character had an inhumane immigration policy instead of Proteus syndrome, The Elephant Man could literally be about Trump.Twin Peaks: The Return (2017)The bad news for Trump is that Lynch’s last Twin Peaks series was a masterpiece of challenged expectations. Beloved characters came back as unsatisfactory cyphers, or giant space kettles, or were sidelined entirely in favour of hour-long avant garde depictions of humanity’s innate cruelty. But the good news is that, utilising Trump’s no-fail movie-viewing technique (getting his son to fast forward through all the parts that don’t include any nudity or violence) he could probably bash through the whole thing in about 45 minutes. New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal wished speedy recovery and healthy life to senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley, who on Wednesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to excuse himself from being included in the new government at the Centre citing his illness.Kejriwal praised Jaitley for his affection and warmth while wishing him good health. “Wish @arunjaitley ji speedy recovery and healthy life. I have known him for many years and despite political differences, I have always found him to be affectionate and warm,” the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo said in a tweet.A day before the swearing-in ceremony of the new government, Jaitley urged Modi to be kept out of it, saying he did not want to be a minister in the new government due to health reasons.Ending days of speculation over his role in the new government owing to his ill health, Jaitley posted on Twitter the letter he wrote to Modi requesting recusal from being a part of the new government on health grounds. He said soon after the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a massive majority in the just-concluded Lok Sabha election, he had informed Modi orally about his intentions of taking time out for the treatment of an undisclosed illness.Without disclosing the ailment he is being treated for, Jaitley said he would continue to informally support the government and the party in any form that is required. aaparun jaitleyarvind kejriwalBJP First Published: May 29, 2019, 4:41 PM IST
New Delhi: One distinct pattern, as one goes through the list of the BJP MPs who have been included in the ministerial ranks, points at a reward for those who turned out to be giant slayers in the Lok Sabha elections. Former cabinet minister Smriti Irani, who defeated Congress president Rahul Gandhi on the Gandhi home-turf of Amethi in her second attempt, of course tops the list. In what was surely one of the biggest poll upsets of 2019, Irani who had been camping in Amethi for several months defeated Gandhi by a bigger margin (3.70 lakh votes) than what she had suffered in 2014 at the hands of Rahul Gandhi (1.07 lakh votes). Even before counting of ballots had concluded for Amethi, Rahul Gandhi in a terse press conference said, “I want Smriti Irani ji to keep people’s faith and take care of Amethi with love.” Debashree Chowdhury also pulled off a stunning victory against all odds, winning West Bengal’s Raiganj seat. Chowdhury was fighting against heavyweights like CPI(M) MP Mohammad Salim, Kanhaiyalal Agarwal of the Trinamool and Congress’s Deepa Dasmunsi. While many considered this seat to be a direct contest between Salim and Dasmunsi, Chowdhury came out as a surprise winner in this seat, 53 per cent of whose voters are Muslim. Two names from Rajasthan have also made the cut in final list: Barmer MP Kailash Choudhary and Jodhpur MP Gajendra Shekhawat. BJP candidate from Barmer, former MLA Kailash Choudhary was fighting against odds even before he began campaigning. There were murmurs of dissent when Col Sona Ram, the incumbent MP from Barmer which shares its western boundary with Pakistan, was denied a ticket. Given the fact that Barmer was once considered a traditional Congress seat and the goodwill of Manvendra Singh’s father Jaswant Singh, many considered Barmer contest to be a simple walkover for Congress’s Manvendra. Choudhary, however, ended up surprising many when he defeated his rival by a huge margin of 3.23 lakh votes. Choudhary’s inclusion in the list could also be seen as a reward for the Jats of the state who wholeheartedly supported the BJP. If Choudhary is seen as a Rajasthani Jat face, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat can be seen as the Rajasthani Rajput face in the cabinet. Shekhawat, who was reported to be BJP high command’s choice as its state unit chief before Vasundhara Raje thwarted the attempt, was fighting against the son of the chief minister Ashok Gehlot. The victory assumes greater value when one considers that Ashok Gehlot is Jodhpur MLA who spent a significant portion of his time camping in the Lok Sabha seat, for which he was later criticised by Rahul Gandhi, for his son Vaibhav Gehlot. Following a Rajput backlash in state in 2017, Shekhawat was made MoS Agriculture. Subrat Pathak is another giant-slayer who defeated Dimple Yadav in what is considered to be an SP stronghold, Kannauj. A Brahmin leader, Pathak started his career early in the BJP, heading its district unit of student wing. Like Irani, Pathak had made unsuccessful attempts to win a rival’s ‘family seat’ and finally emerged victorious in his third attempt by fighting the combined force of SP-BSP-RJD. Also, this was one of the seats where Congress had not fielded a candidate. Babul Supriyomodi cabinetModi Govt 2.0Nirmala Sitharaman First Published: May 30, 2019, 3:31 PM IST

Researchers at Japan’s Hiroshima University have developed a robot prosthetic hand, controllable using only a wearer’s thoughts. The low-cost 3D-printed creation can perform a wide variety of hand gestures, and even engage in a game of rock-paper-scissors. The engineers who developed it hope that it could be used by people who have lost limbs, either through illness or accidents.“Prosthetic hands are prescribed to patients who have suffered an amputation of the upper limb due to an accident or a disease,” Toshio Tsuji, a professor in Hiroshima’s Department of System Cybernetics, told Digital Trends. “In particular, myoelectric prosthetic hands are a type of externally powered prostheses and use electromyogram (EMG) signals, which are generated by muscle contractions reflecting a human’s internal state and motion intentions. To realize a myoelectric prosthetic hand comparable to human hands, it is necessary to achieve both the high-accuracy estimation of the user’s motion intentions from measured EMG signals and natural [and] smooth operability based on the estimated motion.”Hiroshima UniversityThe hand developed by the researchers responds to the wishes of the wearer; using machine learning technology to decode their EMG signals. These involuntarily created EMG signals are gathered through the wearer’s skin using electrodes in the device. The process is similar to how an electrocardiogram measures heart rate. The signals are then sent to the computer, which uses machine learning technology to quickly (within five milliseconds) work out what movement the hand should make. It then sends the necessary electrical signals to the motors in the hand. The results are impressively accurate and can generate an impressively smooth range of motions as required. To put the hand through its paces, the researchers settled on making it play rock-paper-scissors, in which the wearer imagines a hand movement, while another robot hand challenges with them by performing a competing sign. In addition, the hand can be used to pick up water bottles or shake a person’s hand.As a practical tool, there’s still more to be done. For example, while it’s possible to use the hand to turn doorknobs, this can only be done when the doors are not heavy. That’s because the hand is able to generate just 0.5 kgf (kilogram-force) of a normal maximal grasping force. Nonetheless, the team is currently searching for a commercial partner who could help develop the project further and bring it to market.A paper describing the work was recently published in the journal Science Robotics. Late last year, Mozilla launched Firefox Focus, basically the closest you could get to a “burner” browser that kept your online dealings private and erased your footprints after you close the app. Back then, it was made available only for iOS, which was a bit ironic considering it was the last platform Firefox was officially and natively available on. Half a year later, Mozilla has finally decided to grace the Android platform with its single-tabbed focus on privacy. Almost all modern web browsers these days, be on desktop or mobile, have a “Do Not Track” privacy feature. Some may or may not have built-in ad blocking. Firefox Focus combines these two features into one app but also strips out almost everything else.Firefox Focus basically has none of the common features of mobile web browsers. It doesn’t even have tabs! You can open one and only one tab at a time, to emphasize and ensure the privacy of your browsing. Settings are just a few toggles and nothing more. It really is like a burner browser that you open, browser, close, and forget.Mozilla says it was floored by the reception it got on iOS, making it one of the highest rated apps from a trusted brand on that platform. It also probably caused Android users some amount of envy. Better late than never, as they say, and Mozilla is throwing in some special features for the Android version to make up for the delay.Firefox Focus on Android has an optional counter to show just how many ads have been blocked on the site you’re browsing. It also has a rather ironic option to disable the tracker blocker, in case some sites cunningly require tracking to even function. Disable at your own peril. And since Android apps have a habit of staying alive in the background, Firefox Focus has a notification you can tap to instantly erase your browsing data. You can also set Firefox Focus as your default browser, though you will have to bid farewell to the convenience of tabs. SOURCE: MozillaDownload: Firefox Focus from Google Play Store
As of August 1, 2017, Bitcoin as we know it is no more. Not that we completely grokked it anyway. No, Bitcoin isn’t yet dead, fortunately or unfortunately. Instead, there are now two. Bitcoin has experienced what is called a “hard fork”, essentially a very big split. So now there are two: Bitcoin and something that is now known as Bitcoin Cash. And while both operate in exactly the same manner, the two are almost completely independent, which is going to make things a lot more confusing moving forward. There are two problems with the cryptocurrency known as Bitcoin. First is that it’s an utter mess. The second stems from the first: it has become a convoluted chain of oversaturated blocks that almost crawled the still young currency to a halt. So like any good software that has reached a standstill, the “programmers’” solution was to fork it.Despite being something that only a select few understood, Bitcoin has become both a lucrative, as well as a controversial, form of exchange. Whichever way you look at it, its popularity has more than once almost led to its demise. In this latest instance, Bitcoin blockchains have become so full that a transaction could only get approved hours after the fact. It’s not the type of deferred payment that either party would want. The technical problem lies in the way Bitcoin transactions work. These involve a sort of public ledger that contains transactions from each and every bitcoin transaction. These are written as code in blocks that are linked together, hence the term blockchain. But like a highway during rush hour, the sheer number of transactions meant that there was no more room to write on in these blocks until code moved or got removed. The main Bitcoin camp thought of a compromise: building highways on top of highways. They called it “Segregated Witness” and it changed the rules just a bit. Bitcoin users would be able to write transactions on top of other transactions in the same block. The fork now known as Bitcoin Cash, however, wanted to just build a new and wider highway.A Bitcoin Cash block can supposedly hold eight times more transaction than a Bitcoin block. A Bitcoin block can hold roughly 1,700 transactions, processed at 3 transactions per second. In theory, a Bitcoin Cash block wold hold 13,600 transactions. It will definitely take a lot of time before those get filled up, especially considering how much work Bitcoin Cash has to catch up.A Bitcoin Cash unit is currently worth only $240 while a Bitcoin unit averages $2,700. While the two use nearly similar software, not all Bitcoin exchanges and establishments will accept Bitcoin Cash. It’s a Catch-22 situation where Bitcoin Cash’s value is determined by how much it is used, but its adoption is determined by its value. And to make matters extra interesting, the main Bitcoin thread will still push through with its Segregated Witness strategy this month.VIA: CNN
Almost every leak and rumor on this year’s iPhone has been about the so-called “iPhone 8,” or the new flagship with an OLED display that fills the front side. But we know that Apple will debut two other devices this fall: the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus, the modest upgrades and refreshes of last year’s phones. Now we’ve got one of the first big leaks on these other two models, and it reveals a supposed dummy model for the iPhone 7s Plus featuring an all-glass back. These photos are said to originate from Sonny Dickson, a source of tips and leaks with a reliable track record. They reveal that the dummy model iPhone 7s Plus uses the same basic chassis design of the iPhone 7 models, but simply replaces the aluminum back with reflective glass. While photos of a supposed dummy model should always be taken with a grain of salt, these images seem credible based on previous reports. We’ve long heard that the “iPhone 8” will include a wireless charging feature, with the most recent rumor indicating an optional charging accessory sold separately. With this, the device will use an all-glass back in order to support inductive charging technology. But we’ve also heard that the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus will be getting wireless charging as its big feature to differentiate from last year’s 7/7 Plus, just like the 6s featured 3D Touch and the 5s had Touch ID. That would mean that these iPhone models also need to ditch the aluminum back, as the material often blocks most wireless signals, making it incompatible with wireless charging. Apple is expected to announce this year’s new iPhones in September, so we’ll have to wait a few more weeks to see if these images are accurate. If they are, it’s nice to see the 7s/7s Plus will finally ditch those thick antenna lines on the top and bottom.SOURCE 9to5Mac Story Timeline2017 iPhone tipped to resurrect glass back and gain AMOLED screeniPhone 8 wireless charging a 2017 certainty says analystiPhone 8, 7s leaked front and back panels look legitiPhone 8’s wireless charging accessory may not be ready at launchMore iPhone 8 HomePod hints: tap to wake, split status, no Touch IDiPhone 8 release: Apple seems very confident about September
