Antigua PM calls snap general election

first_imgAntigua’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced last Saturday night that March 21st is the date for new elections in Antigua and Barbuda, three and a half years after his ruling Antigua and Barbuda Labor Party (ABLP) won the last general election.“We have performed and that’s why we can stand here before you today and ask for your support,” he told supporters at a rally here dubbed “Rebuilding Together-Safer with Labor.”Parliament dissolvedBrowne said he had written to Governor General Rodney Williams on Friday asking him to dissolve Parliament on Monday February 26.“On Tuesday, February 27, the writ of elections will be issued, and I am giving them 21 days to give them 17-none. So, the date of the next general election will be Wednesday March 21,” Browne said to loud cheers from supporters. He did not announce the date for Nomination Day.“Life is harder, then ever” – Harold LovellIn an immediate reaction, the leader of the opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) Harold Lovell said the government had failed to deliver on its 2014 promises, “deeply disappointing even the diehard supporters of the Labor Party. Life is harder than ever after four years of this wicked government,” Lovell, a former finance minister said, telling supporters that a UPP government would provide a better standard of living for all Antigua and Barbudans.“Use this election opportunity to vote wisely, consider what you had yesterday, how much you have lost today and whether you and your children will lose or gain tomorrow…,” Lovell said.In the 2014 general election, Browne led the ABLP to a convincing 14-3 defeat of the ruling UPP led by then prime minister Baldwin Spencer, who earlier this week, formally bowed out of active politics. In that election, there were 41 candidates representing five political parties including the UPP, ABLP, the Antigua and Barbuda True Labor Party (ANTLP) the Antigua Barbuda People’s Movement (ABPM) and Missing Link VOP.New election is about development“Our primary purpose for calling the election early is not about politics, it is about development,” Browne said, indicating that in 2018, the government had already earmarked EC$1.5 billion for projects, adding “we have to protect that. We can’t allow the destructive forces to stymie the progress we have made,” he said, noting that the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) is projecting that economic growth this year would be at 5.6 per cent.Browne said that in 2019, a further EC$1.5 billion in investment is anticipated, saying “what this country needs at this time is stability and continuity,” adding ‘to make any change is to reverse all the gains we have made…”Browne urged supporters to “turn out in your numbers and to get the vote out on election day” adding “the UPP has nothing to offer this country.”last_img read more

Grenada Government Concerned about Growing Disregard for COVID-19 Protocols

first_img“The lifting of the curfew grants freedom of movement but we must still be responsible as a people. We must continue to adhere to the established protocols, particularly as the country prepares to reopen its borders,” he said. “If people are genuinely concerned about their well-being, they will follow the protocols. We should not have to be told repeatedly that it is in our best interest to wear a mask, to maintain physical distance or to refrain from mass gatherings. There is only so much that the government or the police can do, beyond that, this fight requires an attitudinal change,’ said Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell. ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada – The Grenada government has expressed growing concerns about the continued disregard for the coronavirus (COVID-19) regulations and protocols after several videos of mass gatherings have surfaced in recent days. “I hear the cry of the people – Grenada has no active COVID-19 cases, so relax the protocols. To that I say, the recommended guidelines provide the only way to limit the spread of COVID-19, therefore, as long as the disease remains a global threat, we must continue to safeguard ourselves, our families and our friends. If ever the saying, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure, was applicable, it is now. Let us play our respective roles in preventing the spread of COVID-19,” Mitchell added. He said citizens should not be lulled into complacency with the lifting of the curfew, adding “the COVID-19 Regulations remain in place and we must continue to be guided by these as long as the global pandemic continues and a vaccine is not yet developed. Grenada has recorded 23 cases of the virus that was first detected in China last December and linked to 578,000 deaths and the infection of 13.3 million others worldwide.center_img Mitchell said he was urging young people in particular, not to feel invincible, adding “although some infected persons remain asymptomatic, COVID-19 affects both the young and the old. The authorities have said that people had adopted a nonchalant attitude even as there have been calls for them to demonstrate greater responsibility for their own health and safety and that of their fellow citizens. “Here in Grenada, we have been relatively successful in the fight against the disease, and while we may be inclined to bask in the glory of what that success means, the fact is, we are still in the midst of a global pandemic and we cannot become complacent. first_imgThe big teams across the top European Leagues were at their dominant best on Saturday clinching maximum points on a day Borussia Dortmund’s recent slump saw them lose away at Hannover 96.ENGLANDAnthony Martial netted the winning goal for Manchester United at home to Tottenham Hotspur in a narrow 1-0 win. The exciting French forward who has had to alternate between a bench role and spot in the first team with Marcus Rashford was introduced in place of the latter and made his impact felt 11 minutes afterwards scoring in the 81st minute to ensure second-place Manchester United are three points clear of third-place Tottenham Hotspur while they trail leaders Manchester City by five points.Manchester City edged a five-goal thriller 3-2 away at the Hawthorns against West Bromwich Albion to extend their strong start to the season. Goals from Leroy Sane, Fernandinho and Raheem Sterling cancelled out Jay Rodriguez’s first-half leveller, though; Matt Phillips ensured a nervy finish when he pulled a goal back on the dot of regulation time.Crystal Palace showed grit and determination to crawl back from a two-goal deficit at half-time, eventually forcing a 2-2 draw at home to West Ham United in an action packed London derby. Wilfred Zaha completed the comeback for the Eagles with just a minute left to play in added time, a result and outcome which leaves manager Slaven Bilic for the umpteenth time having to offer an explanation to his employers on how they failed to wrap up the game.Eden Hazard scored the lone goal which earned champions Chelsea a 1-0 away win at Bournemouth in Saturday’s last Premier League game. The mercurial Belgian playmaker profited from Alvaro Morata’s assist to ensure the Blues are on a five game winning streak on the road this season.GERMANYBorussia Dortmund were overthrown at the top of the Bundesliga standings no thanks to a 4-2 away loss at Hannover 96 on Saturday afternoon. James Rodriguez made the numerical advantage count six minutes later, handing the home team the lead. Robert Lewandowski doubled the score to ensure a comfortable score line for the Bavarian giants.ITALYJuventus were 2-0 winners thanks to Gonzalo Higuain’s brace away to AC Milan in the Italian Serie A big game of the day.
