Singing At Fenway: Check

first_imgLinda Chorney and ‘guest’ (her husband, Scott Fadynich) will be rooting for different teams on April 22 when she sings the national anthem for the Yankees-Red Sox game at Fenway Park.Linda Chorney’s life has become a lot busier since she was nominated for a Grammy last year. And while she didn’t win, her career has taken off in ways she couldn’t have imagined since her Cinderella-at-the-ball experience as a veteran musician who became a nominee without benefit of a major industry PR machine behind her.Chorney, who lives in Sea Bright, just finished recording a music video with an Italian movie director. She’s been recording at East West Studio in Los Angeles, where Frank Sinatra recorded “My Way.”“It was the most beautiful studio I’ve ever seen,” says Chorney. “That was very exciting and we got a lot done.”She also just got back from Nashville, where she was recording a new album titled, “When I Sing.”And thanks to a random chat she had with a fellow New Englander who was trying to reach a real person on his cell phone instead of a corporate robot, she’ll be crossing off one of the major items on her bucket list: singing the national anthem for the Red Sox at Fenway Park in Boston on April 21.To sweeten the experience, the Sox are playing the Yankees, her husband’s favorite team. For Chorney, the event will be the “happy ending” she needed to finish writing a book about her journey to the Grammys. But there’s one other thing on her agenda as well.Chorney is joining a group of local women who have pledged to climb Mount Kilimanjaro together to raise money for charities they have chosen.Chorney will dedicate her climb to raising money to end the practice of female circumcision in Africa, a practice in which the clitoris is surgically removed to prevent women from feeling sexual pleasure. “They call it circumcision but it’s mutilation,” Chorney says.“They use the same knife on everybody and kids do die.” Chorney learned about efforts to discourage the practice from a Masai guide who took her to visit his village. She hopes to establish a trust fund that will persuade families to spare their daughters and ultimately fund their college educations. She would be happy, says Chorney, “if I could save one or two girls. The quality of life for women is terrible. They are treated more poorly than the goats and the cows.”last_img read more

Home Affairs turnaround yields results

first_img“The ID book production process was analysed and a new end-to-end process was designed, reducing the production steps from 80 to 15,” Williamson explained. The introduction on new fingerprint scanning machines saw the turnaround time in the fingerprint verification section being reduced from 27 days to four days and 236 000 backlogged records cleared, Williamson noted. There were long queues, frustrated customers, complaints and bad publicity. In addition, there was no mechanism to track and monitor the status or progress ID applications and backlogs. The department introduced the online verification of fingerprints, which enables temporary identity certificates to be issued immediately. The track-and-trace system was also extended for other documents such as passports, birth, marriage, death, citizenship and late registration of birth certificates. Track and trace system Some of the new measures introduced included a track-and-trace system, which requires staff to scan IDs in and out of each stage of the process, allowing the turnaround team to understand how much time an ID spent in a given section and to locate slow areas. 27 June 2011 In June 2007, it took an average of 127 days to get an ID, with some customers waiting as long as 250 days, Williamson said, adding that the long wait resulted in some people applying for multiple IDs, while others had to renew their temporary IDs a number of times. “The department now has an in-house capacity to roll out this approach to other areas of service delivery such as permits,” Williamson said. South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs has more than halved the average time it takes for a person to get an identity document (ID), thanks to the implementation of its turnaround strategy, which was introduced in 2007 with the major focus on ID-related processes and customer interaction. The strategy also resulted in a more efficient contact centre that answered 95% of calls in 20 seconds and resolved 90% of calls on first contact. Department officials were organised into teams, a front office checklist was developed to ensure that application information was correct and complete, and implementation teams were trained. In addition, individual and group performance targets were negotiated with staff, visible daily monitoring was introduced and quality reports were produced and distributed. Detailing the success of the turnaround strategy, Deputy Director-General Avril Williamson said the department had been reduced the turnaround time for an ID from 127 days to less than 45 days. Hackers Give North Korean Heir Birthday Gift on Twitter, YouTube

first_imgTags:#twitter#web#YouTube On Saturday, hackers hijacked North Korea’s official Twitter account and YouTube channel to upbraid the country’s leadership. Saturday was the birthday of current leader Kim Jong-il’s son and heir apparent, Kim Jong-un. A video that appeared on the hermit kingdom’s YouTube page showed Jong-un driving a sports car over starving women and children, killing them with a splat of blood. On its Twitter account, @uriminzok, tweets appeared indicting the country’s leadership. The country only opened its Twitter account in August, following the debut of its YouTube channel by a month. Yonhap News described some of the tweets.“The four most recent feeds posted in the morning accused the Kims of exploiting their people to enjoy sumptuous lives, and develop nuclear arms and missiles. One tweet called for an uprising to slay the Kims ‘with a sword.’”‘Let’s create a new world by rooting out our people’s sworn enemy Kim Jong-il and his son Kim Jong-un!’ one tweet read. Another sought to convince readers that the removal of the dynasty would lead North Koreans to live ‘as happily as South Koreans.’”South Korean media theorized that the hackers were South Koreans.
